Commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, Data Science company Matrixian Group will work on optimising the disclosure of logistical data. Matrixian will collect, enrich and digitally disclose logistical data from provincial and city governments for the benefit of logistics service providers to enable integration with different transport planning systems. Making data available is to enable logistics service providers to schedule their transports better and more efficiently and give road authorities insight into future logistical traffic flows. In the long run, this could lead to a national saving of 20 million vehicle kilometres and about 120 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Logistical data comes from provincial and city governments. After all, they determine where and when people can drive, what substances may be transported, what window times and environmental zones must be adhered to and what the limitations are in terms of weight length, width and height. However, the rules vary per region, with unnecessary waiting times, redirected traffic and damage to the infrastructure as a result.
Through continuous and better insight into logistical data, transporters can optimise their transport planning and carry out trips better. There is less need for the driver to take or look for detours. If such cases do occur, freight traffic can request priority at intelligent traffic lights (iVRIs).
Road authorities also benefit: they can share information about access routes, window times and road works, as well as various real-time traffic and accommodation information, with carriers. This improves the traffic handling, safety and environment in the area of the road authority and makes it possible to actively direct traffic flows. An example: the road authority can decide that in the future, they will only grant access to transporters who can demonstrate that they carry bundled or emission-free stock. This ‘Performance Based Regulation’ can lead to a saving of at least 20 percent in freight and ordering kilometres in the city in the long term.
The award of the assignment ‘Optimisation of disclosure of logistical data’ by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management fits with the objective to utilise the opportunities that data and connectivity offer, in order to tackle social challenges regarding traffic safety, accessibility, traffic flow and quality of life.
